Gary Lineker has tipped Jordan Henderson to win the Player of the Year award for one reason.
The BBC Match of the Day and BT pundit was tweeting in the aftermath of Liverpool’s defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup, and revealed that he thinks there’s “every chance” that the former Sunderland man could win the honour due to the Reds’ terrible form since his injury.
Henderson picked up a hamstring injury in the latter stages of Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, which means that he has missed the last three games coming against West Ham, Watford and Chelsea – tellingly, Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost two of those three games, and were even unconvincing in their 3-2 victory over West Ham.
Before losing to Watford, Liverpool hadn’t lost a game since suffering a 2-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League back in September – ignoring their loss to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup, as Neil Critchley and his U23 players were involved in that game.
As a result of Liverpool’s form tailing off while England international Henderson has been missing, Lineker has revealed that he thinks this could actually help the 29-year-old win the major honour – you can see what the former Barcelona striker tweeted below:
